Why do job applications ask if you receive food stamps or SSI these?

If all else fails, assume that it benefits you. Why? Well, it doesnt benefit you because I cant think of anybody who makes hiring decisions based on this benefit, but FWIW, it is due to a program that incentivizes employers to hire those on government assistance. If you click yes, the employer sends in some paperwork (the way we dial phones these days its really all done electronically) and if the government verifies that, yes, you were on a government assistance program, the employer gets a tax incentive for making you their problem and not the Treasury Departments.
