Why do people object so strenuously to photo ID requirements for?
Its not the basic concept people object to, its the devil in the details. And for the record, I havent been to the food stamp office of social security office, but the rest of those things do not require me to show a photo ID even though I do have one. The problem I have with many voter ID laws is that they design them so that they require ID that people who tend to vote for one party are less likely to have. Like in Texas, the rule is state issued photo ID, and a concealed weapons permit is acceptable, because they know people with a concealed weapons permit is more likely to vote republican, while they dont allow a student ID from a state run school even though it is a state issued photo ID. Owners of both IDs may not be US citizens, but that doesnt factor. Most states will allow a military ID despite the fact that non citizens can serve and the ID has no address or anything to show you live in the state or district you are voting in, but they tend to vote republican soyeah. WI played all kinds of games, after they lost a lawsuit when they tried to prevent out of state students from voting in WI, because of long standing supreme court ruling that said they could, the state just installed a 90 day rule, so students arriving in time for fall semester could register to vote on the first day of class were not eligible to vote until after the november election. They lost that one too, but they still passed enough dirty little tricks to make a difference. Voter ID laws can be done fairly, but they usually arent about ID at all, they are about winning elections.
