Why arent laws in place to make sure all food stamp applicants?
Why arent public school students tested? Because in both cases it is not required by law nor common sense. Testing doesnt stop drug abuse, and it threatens legitimate users. Testing would be an unlawful search, because there is not existing reason to believe those tested are drug abusers. We should stop all drivers as they start their cars because DUI is illegal? Test people walking down the street because they might be a drug abuser? Perhaps just test them as they enter and leave each doorway, just to be safe? A society run by laws, not popular people, depends upon voluntary cooperation, which in turn means that law makers should be careful to ensure that at least the vast majority of laws are considered desirable and necessary by the vast majority of peopleideally no law would pass without 100% consensus. We are almost at the point where we can observe nearly all of the people in any and all public spaceswe do observe a huge proportion. Should we allow the government to freely search for people breaking or potentially breaking laws? Would you support that? Soon we WILL be able to monitor nearly everyonein London and New York City this is very very closein London the system can follow a person from camera to camera real-time. The single problem in the book 1984 is that a surveillance society ends up with everyone watching everyone. Computers make it possible to watch everyone at once with a tiny staff. Its not the monitoring that matters so much as what is done with and who controls the information. If information is power, ubiquitous surveillance is about as much as you can get.
